Cartagena's rooftops are the whole social life of the walled city after about five in the afternoon. The streets are still hot, the light goes gold, and everybody who lives here goes up a few floors to deal with it. Here's where we actually send people, including the one we own, which we'll admit up front is on the list because it's ours.
One thing to know before you plan anything: get up there early. An hour before sunset gets you a seat at the rail. Fifteen minutes before sunset gets you a spot behind three people holding phones.
Ours, since you're already here
We're on Carrera 7 in San Diego and our rooftop is open till midnight. It's not a quiet sundowner terrace and we'd rather tell you that now than have you discover it at ten on a Saturday. Members Only kicks off around 9 on Friday and Saturday, and it gets loud in a good way. Locals get 15% off up here too, so expect real company at sunset rather than a floor of people who checked in that afternoon. This is a place to stay that's also a place the city comes to. If you want quiet and colonial hush, we're probably not your spot, and there are four below that will do that job better.
While you're up, ask for whatever Chef Pedro is doing with the catch that day.
Mirador Culture Bar, for the clock tower
Go here for the closest look at the Torre del Reloj. Mirador is a multi-level restaurant and bar on Carrera 7, the same street we're on, and the rooftop on the fourth floor is the part worth climbing for: a sprawling terrace with 360 degree views and the clock tower right there in the frame. Cocktails run about 50,000 to 75,000 COP, which is the top of the Old Town range, and you're paying for the angle. Dress code is casual, walk-ins are fine, and they run live music and DJ nights, so check the schedule if you want the loud version or specifically don't.
Casa Pura Rooftop, for the sea-and-rooftops 360
This is the best value of the big-view rooftops. Casa Pura sits three floors up in the Old Town with a lush outdoor terrace and 360 degree views taking in both the sea and the historic centre, and cocktails start around 45,000 COP, cheaper than most of the others on this list. It leans chic bistro rather than party, which makes it a good first stop on a night that ends somewhere noisier. Ours, for example.
Apogeo, if you want dinner up there
Book Apogeo when the view is the setting and the meal is the point, not the other way round. It's on the fourth floor at Calle del Porvenir #35-69 in El Centro, the menu runs Mediterranean crossed with Latin, land and sea, and cocktails are around 50,000 to 60,000 COP. The dress code is smart casual, which in this heat means a shirt with buttons and no flip flops. Reserve. It's small and it fills.
Alyzia by Movich, for the photograph
If someone in your group wants the postcard shot of the Old Town from above, send them here. Alyzia Rooftop & Dining sits on top of the Movich hotel with panoramic 360 degree views, and it is the rooftop that shows up in most people's Cartagena camera roll. It's a sit-down rooftop restaurant, not a bar you drift through, so treat it as a booking rather than a wander.
Alquímico, which isn't really a rooftop
Worth breaking the theme for. Alquímico is a multi-level, award-winning cocktail bar in the Old Town, and people genuinely plan trips around it. It's not a sunset spot and the view isn't the reason to go, the drinks are. Go after dinner, expect a queue on weekends, and don't go early expecting a terrace moment.

How to do a rooftop night properly
Start at 5 somewhere with a rail and a 360, Casa Pura or Mirador. Eat around 8, either up at Apogeo or back down at street level. Then come to us for the part of the night nobody photographs well. The whole route is walkable inside the walls, and inside the walls after dark is busy with people doing exactly the same thing, which is the nicest way to move around this city.
One small warning that saves arguments: rooftop dress codes here are real but not severe. Smart casual means closed shoes and a collar at the restaurant-style rooftops. Nobody is checking at ours.
