The short answer
Two places matter for salsa in Cartagena: Donde Fidel inside the walls at the Plaza de los Coches corner, and Café Havana in Getsemaní. Fidel is the easy one, open daily from 4pm and you can sit outside without paying a cover. Havana is the serious one: live orchestra, cover charge, floor so tight you'll shorten your steps.
We're on Carrera 7 in San Diego, at the quiet end of the walled city, which means every option below is a walk rather than a taxi until you're done for the night. What follows is what we tell guests at the bar, including the bits the guidebooks leave out about timing.
Timing, because everyone gets this wrong
Nothing starts when you think. The salsa rooms peak between 11pm and 1am, the clubs run midnight to 3am, and if you turn up at nine you will be dancing with the staff. Thursday to Saturday is the real window; Sunday is quieter and Monday is dead.
So build the evening backwards. Head up to our rooftop, it's open till midnight, and use the light while it's there. It's adults only after 8pm, and Members Only kicks off around 9 on Friday and Saturday, so if you're going out to dance you want to be leaving us around then rather than settling in. Locals get 15% off up here too, so expect real company at sunset rather than a room full of people reading the same guide you are.
